Building climate resilience through community tree restoration & agroforestry
Our flagship project supports smallholder farming households in Nyakasenyi Parish to restore tree cover, protect their soils and adapt to a changing climate.
The Challenge
Deforestation, eroding soils and unpredictable rains
Nyakasenyi Parish and the surrounding communities face accelerating deforestation, declining soil fertility and increasingly unpredictable rainfall. The majority of households depend on rain-fed subsistence agriculture, yet tree cover has thinned considerably over the past decade, leaving farmland exposed to erosion, reduced water retention and falling yields.
Without a coordinated restoration effort, these pressures deepen food insecurity, push households further into poverty and erode the natural resource base on which the parish depends. WCEAD has worked in this community since 2020, understands local land-use patterns, and is well placed to respond.

Beyond the Project
Designed to outlast the programme
The community tree nursery is designed to become self-financing, and trained farmer groups and village environment committees will keep promoting restoration long after the project ends.

A fully functioning nursery producing at least 20,000 quality seedlings every year for households, schools and institutions.
Empower

Farmer Training
Practical training in agroforestry, climate-smart agriculture, and soil and water conservation for hundreds of smallholder farmers.
Sustain

Self-Sustaining Restoration
Village environment committees and a self-financing nursery carry restoration forward long after the project period.
Community Mobilisation
12 outreach meetings reaching at least 800 residents, led by our network of village environment committees.
Demonstration Plots
3 demonstration sites where farmers can see climate-smart agroforestry and water conservation in practice.
School Engagement
2 primary schools receive seedlings and age-appropriate environmental education, extending our reach to children.
Monitoring & Learning
Quarterly monitoring and evaluation reports with a target seedling survival rate of at least 60% at six months.
Expected outcomes

- Improved household resilience to erratic rainfall and land degradation.
- Strengthened local capacity to sustain restoration beyond the grant period.
